9.In a UK context, public trust in the police has been especially well-documented by Reiner (2010). He points to a ‘Golden Age’ of policing in the mid-twentieth century, where public trust in their work was especially high. This reflects a broader shift in public attitudes. Crozier et al.’s (1975) report ‘The Crisis of Democracy’ was one of the first to suggest a wholesale decline in trust in democratic government institutions across the global South. Subsequent work has pointed to important variations across countries, and indicated the difficulty in locating trends, but few political scientists would disagree with Crozier et al.’s (1975) central observation, and recent research has suggested a further down-turn in public trust during the twenty-first century (see, for example, IPSOS’s Global Trends reports).
